Metastasectomy

Metastasectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing metastatic cancer cells or tumors that have spread from the primary site (the original tumor) to other parts of the body. The goal of metastasectomy is to remove as much of the metastatic tumor as possible, which can help improve symptoms and prolong survival in some cases.

The decision to perform metastasectomy depends on several factors, including the type and location of the primary tumor, the extent of metastasis, the patient's overall health, and the potential benefits and risks of the surgery. Metastasectomy is typically considered for patients with isolated metastases (metastases that are limited to one or a few sites) and good performance status.

Metastasectomy can be performed using open surgery or minimally invasive techniques (MIS). In open surgery, a larger incision is made to access the metastatic tumor, while in MIS, smaller incisions are made, and a laparoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light) and other specialized instruments are used to perform the surgery.

Metastasectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia and may require a hospital stay of several days to weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient's condition. It is often combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, to help prevent the spread of cancer cells and improve outcomes.

In Dubai, metastasectomy is typically performed by highly trained thoracic surgeons who specialize in the treatment of metastatic cancer. The surgeons are experienced in performing metastasectomy using both open and MIS techniques. They work closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care for patients undergoing this procedure.
